Occupational Standard Classification of Australia, Upcoming Census Information

Dear ASGC Australian members,

The 2026 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) census is happening on 11th August 2026.

The last census, in August 2021, collected data on the number of practicing genetic counsellors through those who listed their profession as ‘Genetic Counsellor’.

The 2021 census confirmed there were 286 individuals who listed their profession as Genetic Counsellor.

On a list of different types of occupations, called The Occupation Standard Classification for Australia, we are currently listed under “261999 Allied Health Counselling, Psychology, Social Work and Creative Therapy Professionals nec”

https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/classifications/osca-occupation-standard-classification-australia/2024-version-1-0/browse-classification/2/26/261/2619/261999

This grouping means we are less able to directly advocate for our profession to the federal government, as well as inappropriately being grouped with other unrelated health professionals.

To all practicing genetic counsellors, when asked about your profession on the 11th August census, please list your profession as ‘Genetic Counsellor.’ This action will maximise the chance of having our profession’s own OSCA number which will, in turn, allow us to further advocate for our profession.
